Highest Point in the City

Every trip has that one highlight, you remember the holiday for it, for Athens - it was our beloved power bank.

Every trip has that one highlight, you remember the holiday for it - for Athens - it was our beloved power bank.

Well it was my power bank, but it turned it to our saviour for the trip, by keeping our phones charged up. No need for the details specifically, just know that power bank was the real MVP.

Athen’s geographical location, history, food and beaches make it an ideal holiday destination. Situated on the southern tip of Greece, close promixity to beaches, great Greek salad (ofc) and well, history-wise, I think everyone knows.

Hence when selecting a city to visit in Europe for 3 nights - Athens certainly ticked the majority of boxes.

If you remember, the way I enjoy travelling is in an adventurous, economical and at times quick way. Especially when holiday planning in 2025 is getting busy. This trip benefited from all three.

I’ve found you can truly experience cities in this way. Forgot have a stress-free trip though - jokes, you will enjoy it. You just have to plan it well.

The amount of cities I have visited between 2-3 days is in the double-digits. I always find it bizarre when people say they don’t have enough holiday to travel - travelling doesn’t always require a week’s worth of annual leave, it can be weekend trips you take. This way you will see the world and trust me, 2 days in a city can really give you a different perspective.

Alright, back to talking about Athens. See the pictures below for some context.

Palaio Faliro – get off at Eden on the T6 tram, you will find a beach, there you will find serenity.

For my friend and I, we spent a grand total of 1.5 hours on this beach, due to the weather and also the packed itinerary that I had organised. It just so happened that most activities were basked with sunshine, and our chill time included thunderstorms.

Poseidon be playing tricks on us.

Actually, one thing a trip abroad always has to include, is a taxi driver who gives you tips on places to visit, what to do there and how long to spend. This trip was no different, as our taxi driver ‘Bernie’ gave us some good recommendations.

Shout out Bernie. One thing we didn’t manage to do was Cape Sounion - which is site for the ancient temple of Poseidon. Located 2 hours from Athens, Bernie was willing to take us there.

Bernie however, did not know about my itinerary and how stringently we had to stick to it for the 3 days we had there. However, Bernie if you’re reading this - next time we’re in Athens I’m going to hit you up, I’ve got your business card.

Bonus tip: Whenever visiting a historical site - always pay for either a tour guide or audio guide

Prioritising a good guide can actually make your holiday much more valuable and memorable.

I’ve done guided tours in, NYC, Barcelona, Cairo, Rome, Marrakesh - you name it. The level of detail they go into and knowledge they have around the history is phenomenal, something that Chat-GPT can help with, but live and direct is much better.

Enjoying, relaxing and chilling on holiday is something important for me. Yet, whenever there is a chance to learn, experience and dive deep into the history or culture around the city you are visiting, I make sure I prioritise it.

The Acropolis and Parthenon definitely were iconic, and all I could think once at the top was - they need to film a Mission Impossible scene here. Riding through the huge pillars on a bike or something and then parachuting off the top.

Okay, so definitely you need to visit Athens if you haven’t already.

  • Greek Gyros and fresh seafood were 10/10 - if you’re vegetarian, sorry

  • Everything was in close proximity - ideal for a short trip

  • Good people and decent weather - avoid July and August, unless you enjoy being sun-burnt
