Hitting the Peak
When I think of cool places - my mind always reverts to Hong Kong
Why you may ask? Or you may not even care and skip to the next article.
Well, if you’re curious - Hong Kong had this upmarket, vibrant and energetic feel to it. Or maybe it was the fact I had been in China for 10 days and I could finally eat halal food and not worry. Let’s go with the former.
We actually got to HK via a ferry due to visa restrictions not allowing me to exit China via the Shenzhen train station and instead having to go via an approved port. Getting on that ferry was an ordeal in itself. Having misplaced my actual ‘departure card’ which I had filled out when arriving into the country, it meant a 20 minute delay in having to fill in a new one. Thankfully though the ferry was in 25 minutes… (we got this)!
Once we got on the ferry we were leaving for a country I had dreamed of visiting.
5 cities in 10 days, finally time to relax in Hong Kong, oh no says my hardcore travelling personality. Hong Kong was yet to be conquered. The Brits may have left in 1997, but I was coming in 2025.
The first thing was checking into the hotel - Hong Kong is notorious for their extremely expensive square footage prices - which is a result of building regulations which prevents certain areas being built upon and the growing population due to lower taxes and higher wages.
So back to the point, when checking in - the hotel room was by far the smallest of the whole trip - the double bed basically occupied the full room. A stark difference to the ‘suite' like rooms we were used to in China at a fraction of the price.
Anyway the location was ideal, close to a metro and a walkable distance to more authentic streets. So it was time to explore.
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Even after 10 days in PRC - planning things to do in Hong Kong was still top of mind. Althought definitely in a more relaxed fashion.
The first thing, was seeing the icnonic Victoria Peak Tram and riding up to Victoria Peak to see the views of the city. Queen Victoria had a big influence in the naming conventions as you can see.
The timing was immaculate, riding up as the sun was setting and watching the sunset on the 550 skyscrapers HK boasts. It was definitely a good way to start the trip. Everytime I reach a historic / popular site such as Victoria Peak, I always stop and take it in, being grateful for reaching such a place, getting their safely with friends around you. It’s a great feeling.
That’s what I love so much about travelling, it takes you to completely different places you’re use to and offers you the ability to be more grateful for what you have.
